A word from Richard

Hello everyone

It always has been and always will be a very Merry Christmas from me and all the very best for the New Year. Stay safe and hydrated.

Crickey another year has flown by and before we know it, we’ll be knocked off for 2022 and out with staff to end the year with a long lunch. West Coast Water Filter Man will be Closed from 22nd December 2022 to 9th January 2023. We are usually booked out a week in advance, but time slots are filling up fast so if you would like your filters changed or a new system in this year, then you’ll need to get in quick with your bookings.

Patience grasshopper. Oh boy I have been patient for so long now, and it’s so close too. Anytime between Christmas and end of February I should be hearing if due diligence on my 3acre property here in High Wycombe will be successful or not. So, I have all my fingers and legs crossed. Matter of fact, I’m fully twisted awaiting this news. All going well next year I will be able to look at relocating my business and who knows where I will end up. I’m just happy I get to stay here on this lovely property rent free until one month before the bulldozers come in. That will be so sweet.

I had my 40 year school reunion last month and that sure was an eye opener as you might imagine. I’m happy to say that most of us are in great shape and many have done well enough in life to realise there’s more to life and have retired. I loved seeing everyone and hearing all the stories. Sadly though, the next one is set for 5 years’ time as already 3 of have fallen off the perch.

Here’s to a lovely Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Keep hydrated. Stay safe and remember; ‘You either use a water filter or your body is one’

Cheers Cheers.

Solar nanowire-nanotube filter offers easy access to clean drinking water

Scientists have developed a highly efficient water purification filter that uses only solar power. The prototype can supply clean drinking water even at remote places to small populations and can be easily scaled-up.

Even today, clean water is a privilege for many people across the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 1.8 billion people consume water contaminated with faeces, and by 2040, a large portion of the world will endure water stress because of insufficient resources of drinking water. Meanwhile, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), around 1,800 children die every day from diarrhea because of unsafe water supply, which causes diseases like cholera.

It has become imperative then that we develop efficient and cost-efficient ways to decontaminate water. And that is exactly what a team of scientists led by László Forró at EPFL have accomplished, with a new water purification filter that combines titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires and carbon nanotubes powered by nothing but sunlight.

The scientists first show that the TiO2 nanowires by themselves can efficiently purify water in the presence of sunlight. But interweaving the nanowires with carbon nanotubes forms a composite material that adds an extra layer of decontamination by pasteurizing the water -- killing off human pathogens such as bacteria and large viruses.

The idea is that when UV light -- from the visible spectrum of sunlight -- hits the filter, it causes it to produce a group of molecules called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). These include hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxide (OH), and oxygen (O2-), and are known to be effective pathogen killers.

The researchers tested their device with E. Coli, bacteria, the "gold-standard" for bacterial survival studies, but it should work with other bacteria pathogens, such as Campylobacter Jejuni (a common diarrhea-inducing pathogen in the developed world), Giardia Lamblia (a microorganism that causes the intestinal infection giardiasis), Salmonella, Cryptosporidium (causes diarrheal cryptosporidiosis), the Hepatitis A virus, and Legionella Pneumophila (causes Legionnaires' disease). The device is exceptionally adept at removing all the pathogens from water, and shows promising results even for eliminating micropollutants, such as pesticides, drug residues, cosmetics etc.

Water facts

Carbon is used to filter water

There are many ways water can be filtered. Activated carbon filtration is one of the best. Activated carbon is so effective at filtering water because it uses a process of adsorption, as apposed to absorption, to chemically bind impurities to the carbon. It’s cost effective, easy to maintain, removes the nasty stuff and leaves the good. Especially if a sub-micron filter is used.

Customer testimonial

Carlisle

Dear Peter,

Thank you for organising my new water filter tap. I am extremely impressed with all the dealings I have had from your company. Derek who I have met as he serviced the tap at my daughters house and he outlined all the benefits of the system to the point I was convinced that I really needed it. To your call to arrange the service installation. And I was very impressed with Jerome and his apprentice Linken who arrived right on time. They were friendly and respectful, and worked quietly and efficiently to install the system as well as removed my rusty pull out shelf. I thank each of you for this good service.
