June 2019

A word from Richard

Hello everyone.

Well here’s hoping you all enjoyed a lovely WA Day long weekend (190 years since the Swan River Colony was first set up) and bounced back to work nice and rejuvenated.

I managed to finish building a fantastic chicken coop and will be collecting 4 chickens tomorrow. I am getting 4 black Australorps at around 8 - 10 weeks old. Margaret’s Grand Daughters just can’t wait to see them and no doubt they’ll be giving them names. It will be nice having fresh eggs. Yum.

Fishing has been great lately and Derek and I have been catching plenty of Herring and Taylor amongst other sorts too but the nice calm days might be close to ending now with stormy Winter conditions coming in. It sure has been fun while the weather has been perfect. We were getting up super early and getting down onto the groin at Derek’s favourite location before anyone else got there just to secure the best spots and it worked every time. So bring on the Winter and we’ll be back out there again when the conditions improve once more.

Winter has arrived finally and by the look at the forecast for this week it sure looks like heavy rain and even thunderstorms are on their way. I’m very much looking forward to that, how about you? It has been a very dry mild season leading up to Winter so all the rainwater tanks out there will be very happy to get a bit of a top up.

June brings us to another End of Financial Year and we can be booked in for tax deductible purchases for your office. Yes we all need to keep staff happy with purified water. You know that staff are well hydrated they will have better concentration levels and operate more efficiently. Hint Hint. Yep it sure is a good idea. Call us now and even if you have a competitors system in then we will do you a better deal to swing your business over to a Multi Award Winning Local operator. Yes for sure it’s a win/win.

Continue supporting Local Small Businesses and remember; "You Either Use a Water Filter or Your Body Is One." Take care and keep hydrated. Cheers Cheers.

PPCPs in our water

Soaking up pharmaceuticals and personal care products from water

Medications excreted in the urine or dumped into the toilet can end up in the water supply, just like lotions or cosmetics that wash off the body and go down the sink or shower drain. Unfortunately, conventional wastewater treatment cannot completely remove pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Now, researchers reporting in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces have developed an adsorbent membrane that they say could be used to purify water contaminated with PPCPs.

With rising standards of living worldwide, PPCP use has increased. Consequently, these substances are being detected in surface water, groundwater and even the tissues of fish and vegetables. Some PPCPs are endocrine disruptors or could otherwise negatively affect human health or the environment. Scientists have shown that materials called porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) can remove pollutants from water. But because PAFs are in powder form and don't dissolve in most solvents, they are difficult to handle and recycle. Guangshan Zhu and colleagues from Northeast Normal University wondered if they could make an adsorbent material for PPCP removal by coating the surfaces of electrospun fiber membranes with PAFs.

The researchers electrospun a polymer called polyacrylonitrile into a fibrous membrane, which they coated with polyaniline to help attach PAFs to the surface. Then, they added biphenyl molecules and reacted them to grow PAF-45 on the polyaniline-coated fibers. The modified membrane adsorbed three model PPCPs -- ibuprofen, chloroxylenol and diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) -- with capacities higher than most other reported adsorbents. In addition, the membrane was recyclable: The team removed the adsorbed PPCPs with ethanol and reused the membrane for 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, with only a slight decrease in capacity.

Water facts

Cocaine has been found in some European shrimp, and it's part of a disturbing trend of drug-filled shellfish

Scientists have found traces of cocaine in freshwater shrimp across five rivers in the UK.

In a new study, researchers said they also detected the drug ketamine, banned pesticides, and antidepressant drugs in the shrimp.

This isn’t the first time scientists have found drugs in aquatic animals. Mussels in Seattle’s Puget Sound had traces of oxycodone in them, and eels in London’s Thames river may have been affected by cocaine in the water.

Health Tip

Welcome to Winter! Otherwise known as "The Flu Season". The clinic's are already seeing plenty of influenza, pneumonia, bronchitis, and upper respiratory infections. This time of year is hard on many bodies, particularly those who are very young, elderly, and who are immune-compromised.

Boosting your immune system through some easy dietary changes will have you ready to fight whatever bugs might come your way! There are at least 10 winter immune boosting foods to keep your health up during flu season. Of course, there are many other foods that reduce inflammation and boost your health but these ones are sure to produce some seriously amazing comfort foods, too!

Eating these 10 winter immune boosting foods is an easy, delicious way to stay healthy this season!

1. Sweet Potatoes :- are rich in beta-carotene and Vitamin A. Vitamin A naturally gives our immune systems a boost, while beta-carotene acts as a precursor to Vitamin A. Beta-carotene is an incredibly powerful antioxidant. Vitamin A also tells our gut’s immune system to kick things up a notch, so Sweet Potatoes really pack double the punch!

2. Mushrooms :- Our bodies do not naturally produce Vitamin D. Most of us obtain Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight or through Vitamin D3 supplements found at the pharmacy. Mushrooms are one of the only foods that contain Vitamin D, which is critical to your immune system.

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids :- This group of healthy fats is immune boosting at its finest. These fatty acids are found in fatty fish like Salmon, Trout, and Tuna; they’re also found in Flax Seeds, Chia Seeds, and Walnuts. Omega 3 fatty acids are powerful anti-inflammatory foods. They help reduce inflammation, thereby boosting your immune system.

4. Chickpeas :- Chickpeas are a great plant-based source of zinc. While most of us might take zinc as a supplement during cold and flu season, it’s easy to get through your diet, too! Zinc deficiencies have been linked with a lowered immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses, especially in the winter. You’ll also find zinc in Red Meat and Chicken. Add some Garlic (which assists in the body’s ability to absorb zinc) and you’ve got a power duo!

5. Leafy Greens :- High in Vitamin C, leafy greens like Kale, Spinach, and Collard Greens will have your immune system singing. Rather than reaching for a Vitamin C supplement, bulk up your diet with Dark Leafy Greens.

6. Yoghurt :- A healthy gut = a healthy immune system. Your gut and your immune system work hand-in-hand. When the gut is out of balance, your immune system can suffer. Keeping your GI tract populated with healthy, good bacteria may help ward off viruses and bad bacteria that make you sick. Yoghurt isn’t the only source of healthy probiotics. Find them in other fermented foods like Miso, Sauerkraut, and Kimchi.

7. Ginger :- Adding Ginger to tea and meals is a great way to boost your health. Ginger can help your body fight viruses that may try to attach to the respiratory tract cells.

8. Garlic :- Garlic has both antibacterial and antiviral properties. It’s one of the best allies for your immune system! Garlic stimulates white blood cell production, meaning your body is more easily able to fend off foreign invaders. Garlic also helps your body better-absorb zinc!

9. Turmeric :- This spice is present in most Indian cuisine, and with good reason. Turmeric has a deep, earthy flavor and powerful anti-inflammatory effects. In fact, its anti-inflammatory properties rival that of over-the-counter NSAIDs, like Ibuprofen or Advil.

10. Green Tea :- Green tea is packed with flavonoids, a type of antioxidant. Green tea contains EGCG, which boosts immune function. Green tea is steamed, so its concentrations of EGCG remain high. Green tea is also a great source of L-theanine, an amino acid which helps build up your immune system’s T-cells.

Customer testimonial

Just wanted to say thanks for organising the installation of my twin undersink filter and Culino mixer. I love it!

Troy was very friendly and very punctual which was great. He is actually the first plumber in all my years that has arrived at the time he said he would, and he also left no mess at all.
