A word from Richard

Hello everyone.

Wow how time flies! It’s July already and there’s just 146 days to Christmas!!! But most of all TODAY August 1st is the Horses Birthday Yippee…

So we have now had the shortest day of the year so the days will be filled with more sunlight. Yippee. We’ve had stock take and all the sales. Tax time grrrr yep that’s done again too.

There are still tough times out there in the business world for most but some are booming. Tougher times make you stop taking the good times for granted pretty quickly and the smarter ones think sideways and any which ways really to see where they can find business growth. For us, we’re just growing slowly still so that’s way better than the alternatives. The best we can all do is to support local small businesses.

Exciting times get closer. The Forrestfield – Airport Link Development is in full swing with the first of the tunnel borers starting. I attended a private meeting of a 16 block group of land owners to see if we’d all go in together and sell for maximum amounts to the one developer. Wow we’re calling it a developers golden egg. It’s looking like we’re about six months away from the big developers coming in to buy our land. A once in a lifetime opportunity.

So even though it’s wet n woolly make sure you keep hydrated and remember; You either use a water filter or your body is one!

New method of removing oil from water.

Nanoparticles and magnets offer new, efficient method.

When oil mixes with or enters into water, conventional methods of cleaning the water and removing the oil can be challenging, expensive and environmentally risky. But researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin believe they may have developed a better method.

In a study published this spring in the Journal of Nanoparticle Research, the researchers used magnetic nanoparticles to separate oil from water through a simple process that relies on electrostatic force and a magnet. The engineers believe their new technique could improve water treatment for oil and gas production, more efficiently clean up oil spills and potentially remove lead from drinking water.

Today, nanoparticles, which are tiny particles that can be coated with different chemicals such as polymers, are used in a wide variety of areas and industries including medicine, energy and electronics. The versatility of nanoparticles inspired the UT Austin team to explore how the particles could be applied to oil production to lessen its environmental footprint and increase efficiency in both onshore and offshore drilling. They believe their technique could also be used to treat the millions of gallons of fresh water used in hydraulic fracturing and to help clean drinking water.

Modern oil production methods separate 95 percent of the oil from produced water but leave behind small oil droplets that are difficult to extract, which makes water treatment and disposal more challenging and environmentally risky.

Water facts

Most of us don’t spare a thought for the amount of water hidden in the food that we eat.

Have a look at how much water it takes to produce some of our favourite foods and items:

An apple = 70 litres

Glass of beer = 75 litres

Glass of wine = 120 litres

Bag of chips = 185 litres

Slice of bread = 40 litres

Cup of tea = 35 litres

Cup of coffee = 140 litres

A potato = 25 litres

An egg = 135 litres

Glass of milk = 200 litres

Hamburger = 2400 litres

Cotton t-shirt = 2000 litres

Leather shoes = 8000 litres

One kg of beef = 16000 litres

Health Tip

7 Science-Based Health Benefits of Drinking Enough Water.

2) Hydration Has a Major Effect on Energy Levels and Brain Function.

Your brain is strongly influenced by hydration status. Studies show that even mild dehydration (1-3% of body weight) can impair many aspects of brain function.

In a study of young women, fluid loss of 1.36% after exercise impaired both mood and concentration, and increased the frequency of headaches.

Another similar study, this time in young men, showed that fluid loss of 1.59% was detrimental to working memory and increased feelings of anxiety and fatigue.

A 1-3% fluid loss equals about 1.5-4.5 lbs (0.5-2 kg) of body weight loss for a 150 lbs (68 kg) person. This can easily occur through normal daily activities, let alone during exercise or high heat.

Many other studies, ranging from children to the elderly, have shown that mild dehydration can impair mood, memory and brain performance.

Bottom Line: Mild dehydration (fluid loss of 1-3%) can impair energy levels and mood, and lead to major reductions in memory and brain performance.
