A word from Richard

Hello everyone.

It’s a bit chilly hey! Oh yeah Winter sure has arrived hasn’t it? I feel sorry for my poor little lambs but they cuddle up together and support each other. I have built a shelter and even put carpet down in it for them… They love it.

You know I hate it when I catch myself out not practicing what I preach!!! Noticing how dry the skin on my legs has been lately on these cold days and nights. Yep not drinking enough water to keep my cells properly hydrated. It’s pretty easy on cold days to go for another tea or coffee but do try to get some water into your body to counter the effects of dehydration. Small sips more often I suggest.

Just around the corner… The two huge TBM’s (Tunnel Boring Machines) that will start next month digging the tunnels for the Forrestfield – Airport Link have been officially named. One has been named Grace, in honour of High Wycombe’s Edney Pre-primary student Grace McPhee who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia head on with great courage. The second TBM which will begin work in September, will be named Sandy, aptly after the Sandgroper insect that you may find in your garden tunnelling away in the mulch etc. Exciting times ahead.

Well that’s it, one Tax year gone and a new one begins. We had the usual EOFY purchases but not as much as in the past. I guess not many of us have a spare $20K lying around to be able take advantage of the Government Tax incentive to spend. So we just keep chugging along with positive outlooks, supporting local businesses and looking forward to better financial times ahead. We all know it goes in cycles but I think this has been the worst I seen in my lifetime and we’re still enjoying life.

Ok so please enjoy our Newsletter, keep hydrated and remember; You either use a water filter or your body is one!

West Coast Water Filter Man

'Solarsack' cleans water with heat from sunlight, cheaply and effectively.

Two Danish students have developed "SolarSack" for inexpensive and environmentally friendly water purification. The concept was tested in villages, refugee camps and slums in East Africa where it will be marketed.

Anders Løcke and Louise Ullmann, who study Architecture and Design at Aalborg University (AAU), have designed a better and cheaper system for purifying drinking water in developing countries.

The product, known as SolarSack, is a special bag that is filled with four liters of water and placed in the sun for four hours. Using UVA and UVB rays, as well as heat from the sun, the water is cleaned of pathogenic bacteria. The user can then drink the water and reuse the bag for water purification.

The method was approved by the World Health Organization which estimates that between 99.9 and 99.999 percent of the pathogenic bacteria in the water die. The students tested SolarSack in Kenya and Uganda with local users and organizations, and adapted it to their needs. And it's cheap.

"We estimate that a SolarSack can be produced for less than one and a half Danish kroner, transported and end up in the hands of the user for less than a dollar. The bag can be reused 150 times, making it significantly cheaper than the alternatives, says" Louise Ullmann, AAU.

Water facts

Water scarcity

This is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet water needs within a region.

It affects every continent and around 2.8 billion people around the world at least one month out of every year.

More than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water.

Health Tip

7 Science-Based Health Benefits of Drinking Enough Water.

1) Water Helps to Maximize Physical Performance.

If we do not stay hydrated, physical performance can suffer. This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat.

Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. However, it is not uncommon for athletes to lose up to 6-10% of their water weight via sweat.

This can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, increased fatigue and make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally.

Optimal hydration has been shown to prevent this from happening, and may even reduce the oxidative stress that occurs during high intensity exercise. This is not surprising when you consider that muscle is about 80% water.

So, if you exercise intensely and tend to sweat, then staying hydrated can help you perform at your absolute best.

Bottom Line: Losing as little as 2% of your body’s water content can significantly impair physical performance.

Next Issue :- 2) Hydration Has a Major Effect on Energy Levels and Brain Function.
