A word from Richard

Hello everyone; And here comes March.

February was so busy it all seems a blur to me now. We had days that were just so busy we had to swim super-fast to make all our promises come true and I am so proud of my awesome team for their efforts. You know it doesn’t seem like work when we have so much fun doing what we do and everyone loves the products and service too. Thank you all for your continued support.

We have a wonderful team who have as much pride, passion and enthusiasm in providing the Perth community with the best possible purified water service as I do myself. Our number one priority is the high standard of quality customer service on which we pride ourselves that has been the number one catalyst to our successes

Goodness me did you know that this addition of our monthly Newsletter is in its sixth year to date and the main man we have to thank for putting this together each month is our Peter van Dyle. I really enjoy our Newsletter with its interesting water facts and news snippets. Great job Pete.

I’ve been in for minor clean up shoulder operation during February and are healing fast. Crickey the pain killers they gave me were so strong that they nearly made me hallucinate!!! No wonder they said no driving for a week!!! So a few more weeks off from the gym that I love so much but oh well patients grass-hopper as they say and I’ll be back in fine form in no time.

We hope that our Newsletter provides some informative and enjoyable information for all our current and future clients, friends and supporters of the multi award winning West Coast Water Filter Man.

And Remember; “You either use a water filter or your body is one!”

Quenching the thirst for clean, safe water.

It is estimated that one in nine people globally lack access to safe water.

Michigan State University researchers are looking to fill that critical need and provide safe drinking water to the most remote locations in the world with a new foam water filter that significantly reduces dangerous pathogens in drinking water.

"The foam filter is the first of its kind to address a wide range of the biological and economic factors that hinder development of remote water filtration systems," said Joan Rose, Homer Nowlin Chair in water research and author of the study. "This filter is easier to use and more effective than traditional methods."

Published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the study examined a multibarrier biofilm foam filter, designed and manufactured by Amway, as a low-cost alternative to existing household filtration methods.

"The foam filter combines existing water treatment principles and is evidence that conventional municipal water treatment processes can be reinvented into a small, light and portable system," Rose said.

Water facts

The Black Sea

The Black Sea (known as the Euxine Sea, in antiquity; Latin: Pontus Euxinus) is an inland sea between southeastern Europe and Asia Minor.

It is connected to the Mediterranean Sea by the Bosporus and the Sea of Marmara, and to the Sea of Azov by the Strait of Kerch. There is a net inflow of seawater through the Bosporus, 200 km³ per year.

There is an inflow of freshwater from the surrounding areas, especially central and middle-eastern Europe, totalling 320 km³ per year. The most important river entering the Black Sea is the Danube. The Black Sea has an area of 422,000 km² and a maximum depth of 2210 m.

The Black Sea is the largest anoxic, or oxygen-free, marine system. This is a result of the great depth of the sea and the relatively high salinity (and therefore density) of the water at depth; freshwater and seawater mixing is limited to the uppermost 100 to 150 m, with the water below this interface (called the pycnocline) being exchanged only once every thousand years.

There is therefore no significant gas exchange with the surface, and as a result decaying organic matter in the sediment consumes any available oxygen. In these anoxic conditions some extremophile microorganisms are able to use sulfate (SO42-) for oxidation of organic material, producing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide.

This mix is extremely toxic (a lungful would be fatal to a human), resulting in a sea that has almost all of its ecology living in that top layer down to a depth of approximately 180 m (600 ft). The relative lack of micro-organisms and oxygen has allowed deep-sea expeditions to recover ancient (on the order of thousands of years) human artifacts, such as boat hulls and the remains of settlements.

Health Tip

How do you know if you are hydrated?

Despite common misconception, thirst is actually an imperfect measure of how well hydrated you are. By the time you are thirsty you can be already dehydrated by half a litre or so. Therefore, thirst can not be relied upon to monitor hydration status.

A better way to keep check on your level of hydration is monitoring urine output. The motto here is, "Don't go for gold!" When fully hydrated your urine should be clear and odourless.

Customer testimonial

South Guildford

The service we received from West Coast Water Filter Man was simply exceptional - super quick response times in terms of answering all my questions, quality products and the plumber who did the job was amazing! He arrived earlier than the appointment time, was super organized, friendly, quick and very helpful.

Best of all, he left the area super clean and told us we'll be contacted when the filters need to be replaced - too easy!

I believe Richard and his team is the only water filter supplier you need to contact, when you want to install your water filter.

Anton loves the water and our neighbours thought it tastes great too!

Me...I'm still adjusting to the filter watered taste and can clearly taste a difference between that and the bottled water, so I might just need more time to adjust.
