July 2014

A word from Richard

Hello everyone.

Tax Time. I bet we all hate this time of the year with all the stock taking that has to be done. A good thing that came out of Tax time for us is that we had to get our taxable income down so we were able to purchase a new vehicle. Yippee.

What’s on in July? Christmas in July party time for staff! Oh Crickey! School holidays again as term two finishes. Everyone is taking holidays leaving me here to man the fort. Hope we don’t get any urgent jobs. 1st July - International Joke Day, know any?. 4th July - American Independence Day, have a bang of a night. 11th July - World Population Day, go you little breeders. 18th July - Nelson Mandela Day, what a man. 28th July - World Hepatitis Day, ah well leave that one. So there you go.

We’ve had some pretty cold nights lately and cool days too but it’s just as important to keep hydrated through the Winter months as well. Apparently if you drink 3L of filtered water daily, you’ll look 10 years younger. Sounds good to me.

So remember; “If You’re Not Using A Water Filter, Your Body Is One! See you next month. Keep hydrated. Cheers Cheers.

Activated carbon (charcoal)

Activated carbon is carbon that has been treated with oxygen. The treatment results in a highly porous carbon.

Activated carbon is used in water filters, medicines that selectively remove toxins, and chemical purification processes. These tiny holes give the carbon a surface area of 300-2,000 m2/g, allowing liquids or gases to pass through the carbon and interact with the exposed carbon.

The carbon adsorbs a wide range of impurities and contaminants, including chlorine, odors, and pigments. Other substances, like sodium, fluoride, and nitrates, are not as attracted to the carbon and are not filtered out. Because adsorption works by chemically binding the impurities to the carbon, the active sites in the carbon eventually become filled. Activated carbon filters become less effective with use and have to be recharged or replaced.

Several factors influence the effectiveness of activated carbon. The pore size and distribution varies depending on the source of the carbon and the manufacturing process. Large organic molecules are absorbed better than smaller ones. Adsorption tends to increase as pH and temperature decrease. Contaminants are also removed more effectively if they are in contact with the activated carbon for a longer time, so flow rate through the carbon affects filtration.

Water facts

10 Reasons to Use a Water Filter

1) In order to capitalize on the health benefits of water, it is essential to draw from a clean source of water.

2) Drinking impure, contaminated water is the leading cause of epidemic disease in developing countries.

3) There are more than 2100 known drinking water contaminants that may be present in tap water, including several known poisons.

4) Bottled water does not offer a viable alternative to tap water.

5) Municipal water treatment facilities cannot always control the outbreak of dangerous bacterial contaminants in tap water.

6) The only way to ensure pure, contaminant-free drinking water is through the use of a point-of-use filtration system.

7) Several types of cancer can be attributed to the presence of toxic materials in drinking water.

8) Clean, healthy drinking water is essential to a child’s proper mental and physical development.

9) According to the EPA, lead in drinking water contributes to 480,000 cases of learning disorders in children each year in the United States alone.

10) It is especially important for pregnant women to drink filtered water as lead in drinking water can cause severe birth defects.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Do you belong to a gym, but find it impossible to motivate yourself to go?

Are you confused with all the conflicting information in the media on what is the best option for your body type or fitness goal?

Are you disappointed with the results of all your current workouts? Have you hit a plateau or brick wall in your training and don’t know what to do next?

Do you currently not exercise at all, and would like to improve your fitness but don’t know where to start?

Do you go by the adage “no pain, no gain” or “more is more” and wonder why you are always sore, injured, run down and don’t seem to be getting anywhere?
