A word from Richard

Hello everyone.

What a wonderful month October is. The weather is warming up and the summer sports all start. Fantastic!!! So as PT Jenno would say “Get Busy Living”.

Some dates to remember: 5th is Jeans for Genes Day, 10th is Derek’s Birthday, 11th is my Birthday, 16th is World Food Day, 21st – 27th is National Water Week, 22nd is Pink Ribbon Day, 23rd is National Kid-safe Day and the 26th is National Bandana Day.

Our Business Banking account details have changed so please make note of that on your next invoice and remember to quote the invoice number if paying by EFT. Thank you.

I am disappointed that World Vision has just closed the Water Health Life fundraising program that we sponsor and are hoping we will continue to support other vital aspects of their work. I think I will source another water program to sponsor as water is the ‘Essence of Life’.

Stay well. Keep Hydrated. You Either Use a Water Filter or Your Body Is One! ® Cheers Cheers.

Superhydrophobic Droplet Logic: Computing With Water Droplets

Researchers in Aalto University Finland have developed a new concept for computing, using water droplets as bits of digital information.

This was enabled by the discovery that upon collision with each other on a highly water-repellent surface, two water droplets rebound like billiard balls. The researchers experimentally determined the conditions for rebounding of water droplets moving on superhydrophobic surfaces.

In the study, a copper surface coated with silver and chemically modified with a fluorinated compound was used. This method enables the surface to be so water-repellent that water droplets roll off when the surface is tilted slightly. Superhydrophobic tracks, developed during a previous study, were employed for guiding droplets along designed paths.

Using the tracks, the researchers demonstrated that water droplets could be turned into technology, "superhydrophobic droplet logic." For example, a memory device was built where water droplets act as bits of digital information. Furthermore, devices for elementary Boolean logic operations were demonstrated. These simple devices are building blocks for computing.

Water facts

The Swan river

It was named in 1797, by the Dutch explorer, Willem de Vlamingh who was impressed by the many black swans, which he observed upon its waters.

The Swan River drains the Avon and coastal plain catchments, which have a total area of about 121,000 km2. It has three major tributaries, the Avon River, Canning River and Helena River. The latter two have dams (Canning Dam and Mundaring Weir) which provide a sizeable part of the potable water requirements for Perth and the surrounding regions. The Avon River contributes the majority of the freshwater flow. The climate of the catchment is Mediterranean, with mild wet winters, hot dry summers, and the associated highly seasonal rainfall and flow regime.
